Apple’s iOS 26 design refresh, dubbed Liquid Glass, turned heads at WWDC. But not all reactions were glowing.

My initial reaction to the keynote was one of concern for the accessibility of the new Liquid Glass aesthetic. Apple has been a notable leader in the field of accessibility for a long time, earning praise from TechCrunch as early as 2016 for its awareness and innovation. It always appeared that they cared deeply about making their products as user- and disability-friendly as possible, and this is a big step back. I fear that Apple’s move to prioritize aesthetics over accessibility will signal to other companies that this is the way forward in the industry. 

It will be interesting to see how Apple addresses the growing concerns about the accessibility aspect of this update, whether they ignore them entirely or make some necessary adjustments. I hope for their users’ sake that Apple adds a setting to turn off the Liquid Glass effect, making the background more opaque, as this is the primary issue.

Will Apple offer a more accessible toggle option? Or is this a shiny new standard we’ll all have to design around? Time will tell, and the seoplus+ design team will be closely following these updates.
