Chances are you’ve most likely come across an Instagram post or two about the looming Instagram update, but what is it and what does it mean for businesses and brands?

We’ll break it down for you and explain why you shouldn’t worry too much about this update, and how you can overcome it!

Debunking the myth

Contrary to popular belief, the update doesn’t mean people will only see posts from celebrities, but it does mean that the chronological order will be changing.

Currently, when you view the app, you see the most recent images and can continue scrolling down almost as far as you like.

What this update will do is change the order of the images you see by showcasing images that Instagram thinks are relevant to you and will most likely interest you. Although some people believe that this is taking something from Instagram, others, like us at seoplus+ believe that this will only help Instagram become a bigger and more important social media tool for businesses and brands.

What not to do

We urge businesses, brands, and individuals to refrain from jumping on the Instagram “notification” bandwagon. Over the last two days, enough of the #InstagramUpdate images have been posted asking for people to turn on their account notifications for individual accounts. This is however, unnecessary as people will still see your posts, as long as it interests them and is relevant to them.

How to beat the update

Overcoming the update is simple, if you want to stay at the top of your followers Instagram feed, you’ll need to appeal to them more than ever. Depending on the type of account you have, this could mean a variety of things such as taking better photos, posting more frequently, creating better captions, and further utilizing hashtags.

This update is sure to also have an effect on how engaging your followers, are as the amount of people you reach regularly will also change. To help increase the engagement, we recommend posting at optimal times of the day, and ensuring that what you’re posting is relevant to your audience.

Remember, although the update was announced on March 15th, they plan to rollout this update within the upcoming months, so there is still plenty of time to up your Instagram game, and increase your followers.
